Kid-Friendly Macrame Tutorial

Learn how to make the easiest macrame plant hangers ever. These plant hangers can be made in less than 10 minutes with knots you likely already know using materials you probably have at home or can easily and cheaply source from the hardware store or thrift store.

This plant hanger was designed to hold a pop bottle planter but it can be used for any planter. It may need small adjustments for very short, tall, or wide planters.

Upcycled Macrame Supplies

There is no need to buy specialty supplies for this simple macrame plant hanger. Any cord that is strong enough to support your plant and can hold a knot will work well. Thinner cord can be doubled up to add strength. I recommend looking around your home or at your local thrift store to find waste-free macrame cord.

I use a ring at the top of this plant hanger but if you do not have a ring that will work for this purpose you can simply tie an overhand knot to create a loop from which the plant hanger can be hung.

Simple Macrame Instructions

Cut Cord

You will need 10 cords cut about 5 inches longer than the final project will be. Each cords will be folded in half so that he top of the plant hanger will have a loop at the top.

Attach Ring

Use a larks head knot to attach the ring to the cord.

Tie First Row of Knots

Take two cords at a time and make an overhand knot at the level where you would like the top of the planter to hang. Continue making overhand knots with two cords at a time. You will end with up with 5 knots all at the same level.

Tie Second Row of Knots

Using one cord from each of the two knots above tie another overhand knot about 3 inches below the first row. Continue tieing knots using one cord from each of the two knots above so that a circular net forms. You will end up with 5 knots in this second row.

Tie All Cords Together

Tie a final overhand knot using all the cord about 3 inches below the second row of knots.

Add Plant

Carefully place the pop bottle planter into the plant hanger making sure that the cords run along the 5 slots at the bottom of the bottle.
